ASTM F67 GR2 Medical Grade Titanium Rod TA2 Detailed Explanation

When manufacturing medical titanium rods, it is crucial not to substitute industrial materials for ASTM F67 medical GR. Hello everyone, today we are talking about ASTM F67 GR2, which is the medical grade T2 pure titanium. F67 is the standard for surgical implant pure titanium, and it is divided into four grades: GR1 to GR4. The one we use most frequently is GR2, corresponding to the Chinese standard GBT 13810. Medical TA2 belongs to alpha pure titanium, without alloy elements, has good biocompatibility, no magnetic property in nuclear magnetic resonance, and is mostly used for dental abutments and small bone implants. Many people think that it is similar in composition to ordinary industrial TA2 and can be interchanged, but this is a big misconception. Although both are TA2, F67 has stricter control over trace elements. The hydrogen content is the highest at 0.015%, strictly controlling hydrogen embrittlement. The melting must be carried out through secondary vacuum self-dissolution remelting to reduce internal pores and inclusions, and the entire process can be traced. In terms of mechanical properties, the annealed state has a tensile strength of greater than or equal to 345 MPa, a yield strength greater than or equal to 275 MPa, and an elongation greater than or equal to 20%. The plasticity is excellent, suitable for cold processing, and the forging process is destined to start with a temperature of 1000-1050°C, with the final forging temperature not lower than 700°C to prevent cracking. The finished product is returned to a temperature range of 600-700°C, and then ultrasonic testing is required to ensure there are no internal defects. Compared with F136, G23, and F67 pure titanium, the plasticity is good, but the strength is lower, not suitable for high-load implant components. The industrial ASTM B348 GR2 has looser impurity requirements and lacks medical system traceability. In the medical device field, it is not allowed to replace ASTM F67. When manufacturing medical titanium parts, the material standard must be in compliance with the requirements.
